The Onondaga County Resource Recovery Agency is hosting an e-waste recycling event this weekend to help residents safely dispose of their household electronics.

The event will take place Saturday at the Ley Creek Transfer Station in Salina from 8 a.m. to noon. It is open to all residents of Onondaga County.

Televisions, computer monitors, and laptops require a $10 cash payment. All other items are free, but participants must print out an electronics certification form and bring it to the event.

The event accepts household electronics only. No business items will be taken.

A variety of electronics are accepted

Residents can bring a wide variety of household electronics to the event, spokeswoman for OCRRA Kristen Lawson said.

"They can come in with their e-waste...computers, television, monitors, cell phones, radios, game systems, things of that nature," Lawson said. "We actually have a company, Maven Technologies from Rochester, who takes all the materials and recycles them."

The official list of acceptable and unacceptable items can be found on the OCRRA website.

Lawson hopes many residents will participate

The goal of the event is to have as many people as possible in Onondaga County dispose of their electronics safely, Lawson said.

OCRRA usually hosts two e-waste recycling events a year. Lawson hopes this one will attract the same amount of people that other events have.

"There are hundreds of people that attend each of the events. It's a great turnout and we're always appreciative of the community making the effort to come in and recycle these items," she said.

This will be the last e-waste recycling event of 2010.
