Rundown Rationale

I was the producer for Newscast 2 on Thursday November 4th.

We led off with a story about Ann Marie Buerkle taking a slight lead over Dan Maffei in the polls. The story was timely, local, and really important, so it was a natural fit to lead off the newscast.

The next story changed up the pace from reader to wrap nicely, a story about the Sporthorse tournament at the War Memorial. The tournament is a premier event featuring competitiors from around the world, and to have in Syracuse was big local news. It also started today, the day of the newscast, so it was timely aswell.

Another huge local story was the hospitals merging to create one of the largest health care networks in the state. The announcement of the merging was today, making the story timely aswell.

The previous reader was followed by Adam's anchor anctuality about the Madison County store clerks being cited for selling alcohol to minors. The story popped up while we were in class, making it extremely timely, and as a local story, it made sense to put in in the top half of the newscast.

Following the criminal-type story above, i put two shooting stories back to back. The first happened today, so it was timely, and the second was a shooting involving a 14-year-old gunman. The young shooter made that story really interesting, and gave it enough novelty to include.

Leo did his story on a new electronic recycling event that will take place on saturday. The green initiatives are very popular right now, and this story takes place locally, and would be relevant to a local audience.

Apolo Ohno is a very famous and high profile American figure, so the fact that he will be visiting Syracuse to promote his new book is newsworthy. Listeners from the area would be happy to know he's coming, and also curious as to how/where/when they can go and see him.

Adam's national anchor anctuality dealth with the plane engine explosion that grounded a plane. This was relevant because of the rarity of plane explosions. It's also has novelty, and a lot of human interest. I put it towards the end of the rundown because it wasn't local, and because it wasn't as timely as previous stories.

We were running about 6 or 7 seconds over so i cut the story about the Madsion Square garden re-opening. It had been closed due to an asbestos scare and the NY Knicks had to postpone a game because of it.

The "kicker" was a story about LeAnn Rimes postponing her concert in turning stone this weekend. It was soft, but yet local, and seemed perfect for a kicker.
